It’s hard to know if we are coming or going

-

SO, 20,000 PEOPLE are currently coming to the UK every day and 8,000 of them are apparently tourists.

I’ve tried to get someone from the Home Office to chat to me about this on my talkRADIO show or give me a few hints so I could put something in this column, but nobody is forthcoming.

I did speak to somebody from the immigration service on my show the other night and she confirmed she was aware of the number.

It’s extraordinary. We can’t go on holiday anywhere; we’re not even legally allowed to leave the country. But there are lots of people coming here.

True, with the state the rest of the world is in as far as Covid is concerned, I’m not sure many of us would want to travel. But where are the 8,000 tourists a day going? There are no hotels open, accommodation is very scarce and you have to have a jolly good reason these days for travelling.

A pilot friend of mine told me the other day that he’d flown 400 people into the country recently.

I understand that the economy has to continue and that truckers coming here are doing their best to socially distance themselves, but the idea that our borders are so porous seems wrong. All I want is an explanation.

I’m sure that there must be one but for some reason nobody is talking about it. So let’s hear from the Government why apparently so many people can arrive when we can’t leave.

I’M A BIG fan of Boris Johnson. I think in these troubled times he’s done remarkably well. It’s a shame the same cannot be said for the Leader of the Opposition. Sir Keir Starmer must be the most uncharismatic leader I have ever seen. What he needs is a stylist and before you ask, I’m not offering.

But while I’m on that subject, as big a fan as I am of Boris, I worry about his hair. It’s beginning to annoy me, particularly as you can see that it has been carefully manoeuvred to look unkempt.

The other day it had obviously been brushed in different directions to give it the classic Boris look, which is fine. But as our leader and the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, no less, perhaps it’s time for his stylists to consider a slightly more grown-up approach.

It doesn’t have to be perfect. In fact I would rather it wasn’t. It just has to look slightly more like it’s saying, “I’m in charge.”

I’M DELIGHTED that so many pubs and restaurants are opening today. But can anybody explain to me why I will still have to sit outside in the cold, when I can go and get my hair done, visit my local spa, hang out in a very sweaty gym or head to the supermarket to mix with lots of excited shoppers?

As long as pubs and restaurants adhere to social distancing, I don’t understand why they can’t open a few inside tables.

I just don’t see what the problem is – and I don’t think any of the people who make these decisions do either.
