Fans are on cue to rock back to life

- By Jan Disley

MUSIC and sports fans played a blinder at two key test events yesterday – without face masks or social distancing.

Five thousand people flocked to Liverpool’s Sefton Park for a trial festival headlined by chart-topping indie band Blossoms.

And a capacity crowd of 980 was gripped by the World Championship snooker final between Shaun Murphy and Mark Selby at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield.

Fans at both events needed to provide a negative test and scientists will now examine whether crowds mixing increases transmission risk.

Those attending had to still observe standard handwashing but could take masks off inside if they wished.

Melvin Benn, managing director of Festival Republic, said: “Live music is a must-have in my life and a year without it is a year too long.

“The Sefton Park Pilot is the most important event in the Events Research Programme for getting festivals back this year and I’m delighted to play my part.

“It’s not about vaccines, it’s not about passports, it’s not about limiting it to a section of society only: it’s about a universal approach to our love of live music for all and demonstrating we can do it safely.”

Claire McColgan MBE, Liverpool’s director of culture, said: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with the Government and the University of Liverpool on this vitally important research programme. Events are part of the DNA of Liverpool and a critical part of our culture and community. More than that, they represent more than half of our economy, so also play a major role in the success of the city.” Meanwhile, the atmosphere was also electric at the Crucible Theatre.

Emily Frazer, managing director of Matchroom Multi Sport Ltd, praised the World Snooker Tour, saying: “Wow the atmosphere in the Crucible is insane. Hats off for pulling this off. What an event.”

The Government hopes its Events Research Programme will provide the pathway to opening up safely as part of the roadmap out of lockdown.
