Car takes a slice out of pizza restaurant

- By Paul Jeeves

A PIZZERIA that only opened a week ago following lockdown is in tatters after a car careered through the front window.

The family who own the Zucco restaurant in Leeds were alerted by an alarm at 3.20am yesterday.

Manager Matteo Leggiero, 23, said he was glad no one was inside. But he added: “You wouldn’t be able to use the words I used when I found out. It’s been a tough year, and last week was one of our best weeks ever. We were excited to get back to our customers. And our staff, who have been on furlough on-and-off for the last year, were excited to get back to working.

“This has stopped us right in our tracks – but we’re hoping that the insurance pulls through.”

West Yorkshire Police said the male driver of the white BMW had been taken to hospital as a precaution but wasn’t badly injured.

They are investigating the cause of the crash.
