‘Floyd would want Britain to fight on’
GEORGE Floyd’s girlfriend urged Britons to keep fighting racial injustice yesterday on the first anniversary of his murder.
Courteney Ross, whose dad was from Britain, spoke a year to the day since her boyfriend was killed by cop Derek Chauvin.
Millions worldwide marked George’s death yesterday. He was murdered by Chauvin, 46, who knelt on his neck for nine minutes 28 seconds after arresting him on suspicion of using a fake $20 in a Minneapolis store.
Chauvin faces up to 40 years in jail. Fighting back tears, Courteney said the “mama’s boy” she loved would want people to use his death as a force for good: “When it comes to what Floyd cared about, it was about taking care of people in need.
“In his opinion, that has always been the homeless, our youth, our elderly, those in society we do not pay enough attention to.
“He would ask as I do to turn your voices, turn your dollars, your pounds to help those people.” She said family, friends and strangers – particularly in Britain – kept her going after George’s death: “I always felt my heart was in Britain because my father came from there. So to see people in Britain rise up as they did was like seeing my extended family support me from across seas.” George’s family also met House Speaker Nancy Pelosi at the US Capitol yesterday. Ms Pelosi told George’s six-year-old daughter Gianna the little girl’s belief her dad would change the world was “coming true”.
