Battle of Britain pilot’s medals go on sale
A BATTLE of Britain hero’s medals and letters are expected to fetch £1,600 at auction, after being found in an old suitcase.
Flight Sergeant Eric Redfern’s archive includes a letter of condolence from King George VI to his wife Joan after he was shot down and killed in 1941.
The letter from the King says: “The Queen and I offer you our heartfelt sympathy in your great sorrow.”
Flt Sgt Redfern, 27, was ambushed by German fighters during a raid on enemy supply vessels at Le Touquet in northern France. He had been married to Joan for just a few weeks. She kept
his medals in a suitcase for the rest of her life, which was passed down through her family after she died.
The archive is being sold online today by a private collector with C&T Auctioneers, of Ashford, Kent.
