Easy to carry on camping if you have the right cover
CAMPERS and cyclists are being urged to take cover to make sure their possessions are safe in the great outdoors.
With foreign travel hanging in the balance, growing numbers are camping and cycling on these shores instead.
GoGompare Home Insurance is urging campers to stay happy by insuring the valuables they pack with their tent.
Many assume gadgets such as smartphones, laptops, tablets and bluetooth speakers are automatically covered under their home insurance policy. Yet more than eight out of 10 policies only include them if you pay extra for away from home personal possessions cover.
Check cover limits, which may be as little as £250 per item, while theft of items left unattended in a tent are likely to be excluded altogether.
Valuables stolen from a car are usually covered only if locked out of sight in a boot, concealed luggage compartment or glove box.
GoCompare spokesperson Ryan Fulthorpe said: “Keep electrical items to a minimum and make the most of your car for safe storage.”
Bike prices are accelerating with buyers spending from £700 to more than £10,000, but insurance has not kept pace leaving many with inadequate cover.
Many home insurers do not include cover for bikes as standard and even those who do set low limits, with one in five offering less than £1,000 and 5 per cent less than £500, according to Defaqto.
Its consumer finance expert Brian Brown said check what your insurer offers: “If you have one of the more expensive models, consider a specialist bike insurance policy.”
