Riot cops under attack

DRUNKEN thugs attacked police with glass bottles after breaking lockdown rules and refusing to leave an illegal party.

Around 1,000 teenagers at an unlicensed music event in central London turned on officers during the Saturday night rampage.

The chaotic scenes sparked panic among families enjoying a balmy summer evening.

Met Police Chief Supt Karen Findlay said: “It’s important families enjoying restaurants and entertainment feel safe. Groups fighting and intimidating others and officers being met with glass and missiles are not acceptable.”

Riot police raced to an area near to the London Eye on the Southbank and encountered hostility and violence. Security video footage shows officers being chased under a volley of bottles and glass.

Meanwhile in Leeds, the hottest day of the year encouraged thousands of revellers to hit the streets for a giant party where social distancing was ignored, despite a crackdown by West Yorkshire Police ordering people to “enjoy summer safely”.

The worried force warned: “A mix of football and alcohol can lead to violence – think about the safety of yourself and those around you.”
