Calls for five-year ban on lobbying

- By Trevor Marshallsea

THE anti-corruption watchdog will recommend ministers be banned from political lobbying for up to five years after leaving office.

It comes in the wake of the Greensill Capital saga involving former prime minister David Cameron. He sent messages to Chancellor Rishi Sunak and Matt Hancock on behalf of the finance firm.

A report by Lord Evans, chairman of the committee on standards in public life, will today also recommend introducing antilobbying clauses to contracts of ministers, special advisers and civil servants.

It will also advise ministers be banned “from taking jobs for two years in sectors over which they had direct responsibility in office” or five years “where appropriate”.

Lord Evans said: “There’s nothing wrong with lobbying in principle, but there needs to be a level playing field and it needs to be done visibly.”
