Brolly good show...UK puts Med in the shade with an 82F scorcher
BEACHES were bustling and parks were packed as Britain basked in temperatures that bettered the Med yesterday.
Hottest spots were St James’s Park, London and Heathrow airport at 82F (27.8C) – warmer than amber-listed Ibiza (81F) and Mykonos (79F) and only just below this year’s record of 82.9F (28.3C) in Northolt, West London.
Sun worshippers slapped on the suncream in packed resorts from Southend-onSea to Scarborough, Blackpool to Bournemouth.
At the London Fields Lido in East London, manager Rafal Cymbalista said business was booming: “On a day like today we get around 1,300 to 1,400 people. A day like today is a blessing.”
It is likely to be sweltering today too, especially in south-east England, while some rain or drizzle may creep over northern England and Wales.
Forecasters expect from tomorrow to Thursday will be fine and dry for most at first, but the North-west of England will see rain tomorrow.
Heat in the South will bring thundery showers on Wednesday and Thursday, and the Met Office warned of “potential for travel disruption and flooding”.
A spokesman added: “Thunderstorms are expected to move north east across parts of England and Wales from late Wednesday through to Friday morning. Rainfall totals of around 30mm (1.2in) could fall in an hour.”
