1839: The Henley Regatta, now established as British rowing’s showpiece event, took place for the first time.
1982: Italy opened their World Cup campaign in Spain with a goalless draw against Poland. They went on to win the competition, beating West Germany 3-1 in the final.
2002: Portugal were eliminated from the World Cup after losing 1-0 to co-hosts South Korea. 2007: Midfielder Joey Barton completed his move to Newcastle from Manchester City for £5.8million.
2009: Andy Murray beat James Blake 7-5 6-4 to win the AEGON
Championship title at Queen’s Club.
2016: Ronald Koeman was appointed Everton manager in succession to Roberto Martinez. 2017: Southampton sacked manager Claude Puel a year to the day since taking over after Koeman left for Goodison Park. 2018: Hosts Russia opened their World Cup campaign with a 5-0 thrashing of Saudi Arabia at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow.
