WHEN a manager pulls off the kind of gamble Gareth Southgate succeeded with at Wembley, it only increases confidence in the dressing room.

Southgate is clearly a loyal manager so, while it was a shock to see Raheem Sterling in the side ahead of Jack Grealish, it would not have shocked the players.

Nor was Kieran Trippier, left, at left-back. They would have worked on that for three or four days.

Maybe one or two players might have been privately unsure about the choice of Trippier when you have two top left-backs in the squad. But when it comes off it gives the players more confidence. I
