Break-out gang man ‘unarmed’

- By John Twomey

A GANG plotting to spring a gunman from a prison van were unarmed when a suspect was shot dead by police, an inquiry heard yesterday.

Jermaine Baker, 28, was killed in a car while he and others waited to ambush the van.

Intelligence revealed the group had trouble “sourcing” a gun and there was nothing to suggest they were routinely armed, the hearing was told.

An imitation machine gun was found in the rear of the stolen Audi, it was said.

The armed officer, known only as W80, believed Baker was reaching for a weapon.

Father-of-two Baker was killed as the gang waited for a prison van to deliver convicted gunman Izzet Eren to Wood Green Crown Court, north London, in December 2015.

Officials said W80 should face a disciplinary hearing for alleged gross misconduct.

The inquiry continues.
