Land Rover’s Defender will use hydrogen fuel cells

- By John Ingham

LAND Rover are developing a prototype of their Defender powered by hydrogen fuel cells.

Testing on a zero-emission version of the popular 4x4 will begin later this year, manufacturer Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) said.

The scheme is part of the company’s aim to achieve zero tailpipe emissions by 2036, and net-zero carbon emissions across its supply chain, products and operations by 2039.

The technology involves using hydrogen to generate electricity to power a motor, with water being the only waste product.

Rivals Toyota and Hyundai already have hydrogen vehicles on sale. JLR’s Ralph Clague said: “Hydrogen offers another zero tailpipe emission solution for Jaguar Land Rover’s world class line-up of vehicles.”

Jim Holder, editorial director of magazine and websiteWhat Car?, said the announcement was “a very significant moment” as the Land Rover is synonymous with heavy polluting SUVs, known as Chelsea tractors. He said: “Hydrogen is quick to fuel, taking just minutes to put enough in a tank for 300 miles of driving.

“Some experts argue it is a better long-term environmental solution than battery-powered electric cars.”

The original version of the Defender was a favourite with the Queen and was featured in the James Bond movie Skyfall.
