Madeleine suspect in letter rant at lawyers
THE prime suspect for the kidnap of Madeleine McCann has slammed the investigation into him as a “scandal”.
Convicted child molester Christian Brueckner also protested his innocence and called on prosecutors to resign.
Brueckner, 44, in jail in Germany, said: “You bring shame to the German legal system.”
He broke his silence in a letter published by German tabloid Bild yesterday. The angry, hand-written note included a bizarre cartoon featuring two state lawyers ordering a meal together – suggesting that he thinks the allegations against him are cooked up.
A year ago Brueckner was identified as the chief suspect in the disappearance of Madeleine but has still not been interviewed.
German state lawyer Hans Christian Wolters says there is evidence Brueckner abducted and murdered three-year-old Madeleine but admits there is not enough to charge him yet.
Madeleine’s parents Kate and Gerry McCann, of Rothley, Leicestershire, hoped identifying Brueckner as the prime suspect was a major breakthrough.
Brueckner was sentenced to seven years for raping an elderly woman in Praia da Luz two years before Madeleine went missing in that resort in 2007 – while he was still there.
The investigation is continuing.
