Kasper’s visit to Eriksen a real tonic

- By Chris McKenna

KASPER SCHMEICHEL visited Christian Eriksen in hospital and said it was “damn nice” to see his team-mate.

And now he wants the Danes to win Euro 2020 for their stricken friend.

Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest in their opener against Finland on

Saturday. Keeper Schmeichel has now seen him in hospital.

“It was damn nice to see him smile and laugh and be himself and just feel that he’s there,” said Schmeichel. “It has helped a lot.”

Schmeichel was one of the first to console Eriksen’s wife Sabrina. Denmark lost the game 1-0 and now face group favourites Belgium on Thursday. Schmeichel is focused on getting back on track.

“We’re still in the tournament,” he said. “Now we have to try to win this and do it for Christian and for all the fans who sat with us and were just as powerless in the situation as we were. “I have no doubt this team has the unity and the strength to be able to come together and go out and do something special.”

Denmark’s players have been offered counselling following the traumatic experience.

Manager Kasper Hjulmand said his players would be given the time they needed to recover after Martin Braithwaite, above, said it had been extremely tough.

Braithwaite said: “I’m still emotional about the situation. Most importantly Christian is feeling better and so I’m feeling better too.

“It was important personally to see that he felt better via video. I had some pictures in my head from last Saturday that I would like to get rid of.

“We were all about to lose a friend and a team-mate.”
