MAJOR EVENTS GET FAN BOOST
WEMBLEY could be allowed to host up to 45,000 fans for England’s potential last-16 tie, the semi-finals and final at Euro 2020 after the stadium was granted an exemption from the four-week delay in easing of lockdown restrictions.
And Wimbledon, which begins on June 28, will see its women’s and men’s singles finals played in front of a full 15,000 Centre
Court crowd.
But access will be restricted to those who have been vaccinated or can prove their negative Covid status with a lateral flow test – with all verification through the NHS App, as the Government significantly increases the trials of vaccine passports. Prime Minister Boris Johnson delayed England’s full reopening
from June 21 to July 19 yesterday but various sports test events will still go ahead.
As well the Euros and Wimbledon, England’s Test match with India, The Open Championship, the British Grand Prix and Challenge Cup final could all get bigger crowds. These will form part of the Government’s Events Research Programme. Wimbledon will start with 50 percent ground capacity, rising to 100 percent on Centre Court for the finals. Johnson, left, said: “We will continue to pilot events such as the European Championship and performances.”
