Mvogo’s primed for emergency call up

- By David Anderson

YVON MVOGO is ready to come to Switzerland’s rescue tomorrow if Yann Sommer has to make an emergency dash home.

First-choice goalkeeper Sommer could miss the clash with Italy to attend the birth of his second child.

But Mvogo, below, is ready despite having played just one competitive match for the national side.

Sommer’s wife Alina is due to give birth any day and the Swiss have arranged for the Borussia Monchengladbach stopper to jet back to Germany.

The game in Rome’s Olympic Stadum could be pivotal for the Swiss, but coach Vladimir Petkovic has told Sommer he must be with his wife.

Petkovic has drafted Borussia Dortmund keeper Gregor Kobel into his squad as extra cover for Sommer’s understudy Mvogo.

Mvogo says being the No.2 at RB Leipzig before he joined PSV Eindhoven on a two-year loan in 2020 has helped him to prepare. “I know this situation very well because of when I was at Leipzig,” said the Cameroon-born player.

“As the second-choice goalkeeper, you never know what can happen, so you always have to be prepared.”
