Clarke rues bad breaks

-

had made a mental note of Marshall’s positioning high up the field earlier in the game and planned his long shot – which he also practises in training.

Manager Clarke, below, said his side were a victim of bad breaks at the wrong time, just as they were on top and creating chances.

On the second Schick goal conceded by Marshall, he added: “If he had been on his line he would have caught it. But in normal circumstances he’s looking to sweep up behind the defence.

“It was a fantastic finish. Rather than looking to apportion blame all the time, sometimes you’ve got to credit the goalscorer. “We came out for the second half and Jack Hendry hit the bar. Then Jack’s shot got blocked and fell straight to their striker and he produced a marvellous finish.

“From there it becomes a long and difficult afternoon.

“We showed good invention and had chances to get back in the game. Had one gone in, it could have been a different ending.

“So, it’s disappointing but we are ready for the next one [against England on Friday].”

Schick said of his wonder goal: “I checked already in the first half.

“I knew he [Marshall] stayed very high, so when the ball came I saw he was out so I tried – and it was a nice goal.”
