Captain Kane sets out home truths

much as possible,” said Kane. “It’s obviously a massive tournament and I know how much it means to the country.

“We know we haven’t won a major trophy for a long, long time so to try to achieve that with a lot of the games at Wembley, our home stadium, would be incredible.

“That’s all I’m focused on, that’s all the team are focused on and we’ll do our very best to, as first step, qualify tomorrow night and then hopefully go as far as possible after that.

“If we fell short of a semi-final, we’d all be disappointed as players, as a country and as staff as well.

“We have been moving in the right direction in the last three or four years so the next step is to go one step further at least and try and get into that final and hopefully try and win it.We believe we can win it. It’s been a dream since I was a kid to win a tournament and lift a trophy with England and to have that opportunity now is exciting.”

Kane has tried not to become too wrapped up in the hype, diverting himself by watching episodes of hit TV show Game of Thrones. But ahead of a huge night at Wembley he is ready for the Euros equivalent of The Battle of the Blackwater.

“We know what it means as players to represent England and when you are playing a home nation like Scotland we know what that entails with the fans and the build-up around the game.We are trying to use that and take those feelings into the game,” he said. “We want to make our country proud, make each other proud, make our friends and family proud.”
