Hugh-dunnit? Star’s on case

- By Steph Spyro

HUGH Laurie’s new job is murder – and he nearly trips over a “corpse” while directing one of his favourite Agatha Christie mysteries.

The House star, who is also executive producer of Why Didn’t They Ask Evans?, was filming at Three Cliffs Bay in the Gower Peninsula.

Getting pointers from their boss were Will Poulter, 28, and Conleth Hill, 56. Former comic Hugh, 62, had been spotted shooting in Guildford, Surrey, Ely Cathedral and Selwyn College, Cambs, earlier this month.

But he has now ditched his tie, despite vowing to keep it on while honouring the story.

Talking about the novel, first published in 1934, Hugh said: “I loved this book as a nipper and still do. The hairs on the back of my neck haven’t properly settled down from the first time I grasped the beauty of the essential mystery.

“Since then, I have fallen deeper and deeper in love with the characters and feel immensely honoured to have been given the chance to retell their story in this form.

“I will wear a tie on set, and give it everything I have.”

The Britbox series, due next year, sees vicar’s son Bobby Jones unite with socialite Lady Frankie Derwent to investigate what happened to a man who gasps “Why didn’t they ask Evans?” on his deathbed.

Armed with only a photograph of a beautiful young woman found in the dead man’s pocket, the amateur sleuths embark on a crime-solving adventure and prove surprisingly adept.
