Foda rules out another Austria carve-up

- GIDEON BROOKS

UKRAINE and Austria ruled out a Group C stitch-up by insisting they are both going all out to win tonight.

A draw in Bucharest would see Ukraine grab second place behind Holland and Austria finishing third, also with four points.

While that would not seal Austria’s place in the knockout stages, their goal difference will almost certainly be enough. “We always want to win matches,” said boss Franco Foda, right.

“Maybe we are qualified with a draw but of course we want to win.”

Austria featured in a controversial World Cup carve-up in 1982, conspiring with West Germany to lose 1-0 in Spain, a result that sent Algeria home. Ukraine manager Andriy Shevchenko insisted there were dangers in aiming for a draw. “You know this kind of thinking can be punished a lot,” he said.
