BBC presenter: My cancer has moved the wrong way

- By Chris Riches

BBC health campaigner Deborah James last night revealed her bowel cancer has dramatically worsened.

The BBC podcast presenter, known on social media as Bowel Babe, said her cancer has “moved very quickly in the wrong direction”.

The You, Me And The Big C star, 39, has been living with stage four cancer since she was diagnosed in December 2016.

She told her 150,000 Instagram followers that tests at London’s Royal Marsden Hospital had uncovered worrying new results.

Scans detected a new “rapidlygrowing” tumour close to her liver that is not responding to her current experimental drugs.

The mother of two said the new tumour is wrapped around her bile duct, adding “the signs have been there for a while”.

Deborah explained: “The truth is, it never really went away.”

She praised her “superman” banker husband Sebastien Bowen for “keeping the family together”. The couple have two children, Hugo, 13, and Eloise, 11.

Options

And detailing her options she says her oncologist “wants me back on chemo”.

Deborah finished the post by saying she was “taking the weekend to snuggle up with my family…and I urge you to do the same.” Supporters showered the formerWest London deputy headteacher with best wishes, including Jodie Kidd, Lisa Snowdon and Anthea Turner.

Jodie wrote: “So, so, so much love. Snuggle up, cuddle time.”

In 2018 Deborah and fellow cancer patients Lauren Mahon and Rachael Bland launched the You, Me And The Big C podcast.

Mother-of-one BBC journalist Rachael died aged 40 from breast cancer in September 2018.

Deborah recently launched ITV’s Lorraine’s No Butts campaign, designed to get people talking about the illness.

According to Bowel Cancer UK, more than 41,200 people are diagnosed with bowel cancer every year in the UK.
