Drive to help jobless Army vets get work
ARMY veterans will get extra support from specialists to help them find jobs – and allow firms to use their “gold mine of talent”.
The Department for Work and Pensions has bolstered its Armed Forces Champions network of Jobcentre staff, who offer advice and assistance to unemployed military vets.
The Champions programme was introduced 10 years ago to help demobbed Army, Navy and RAF personnel find civilian work.
The team is now increasing by almost a third to 61 experts.
Welfare delivery minister Will Quince, right, told the Daily Express: “The Armed Forces do our country proud.
“We are forever grateful to them for the sacrifices they make in order to serve our nation. It’s not just about recognising that though.
“Veterans offer a range of skills like no other – they are a gold mine of talent. This network will provide specialist one-to-one support to veterans and their families as they take the first steps to find a job.”
Leo Docherty, minister for defence people and veterans, added: “The vast majority of veterans go on to make a huge contribution postservice. Some do struggle.
“This extra support will help them as they transition into civilian life.” Every Jobcentre Plus district in the country will now have a dedicated expert offering tailored support for veterans and their families. Many of the Champions are also ex-Forces. They offer support and advice in seeking and applying for new jobs, including help with preparing CVs.
