PLATE PLAN FOR SHAN

- By Chris Goulding

ALAN KING reverts to “Plan B” and runs Trueshan in Saturday’s William Hill Northumberland Plate at Newcastle.

Trueshan was denied his place in last Thursday’s Ascot Gold Cup after rain arrived too late for the gelding to take his chance in the premier staying event.

“Newcastle was always Plan B if we could not go to Ascot,” said King, right.

“The surface is not a problem, and we don’t have to worry about the weather, while I have no qualms about him carrying 10st 4lb as he is a big strong horse. Desert Orchid and Arkle used to give plenty of weight away to good horses in handicaps, and there is a limited range in any event.”

His welter burden will be helped by the 5lb claiming apprentice Rhys Clutterbuck taking the ride. Trueshan heads the sponsors betting at 6-1 with Rainbow Dreamer, also an intended runner for King, at 16-1.

“We had Rainbow Dreamer entered for the Queen Alexandra (Royal Ascot on Saturday), but I am not convinced he really stays two miles and five,” said King, hoping to add to his 2019 success in the race with Who Dares Wins. “He’s a better horse on the all-weather.”

Aidan O’Brien, seeking a 15th victory in the Irish Derby, will be represented by the 11-8 favourite High Definition.

Richard Hannon has supplemented his Derby runner-up Mojo Star for the race and is next best in the market at 9-2, along with Derby third Hurricane Lane.

Frankie Dettori partners Lone Eagle for Martyn Meade and is a 6-1 chance.
