Spending frenzy after wonders of Wembley

- By Steph Spyro

HARRY Kane and his Three Lions teammates are bringing the nation to fever pitch – and will score a mighty economic boost across Britain, experts predict.

The cloud nine mood after England’s momentous win yesterday could make us splash the cash in the millions – and give a welcome shot in the arm to pubs.

Retail analyst Richard Hyman said: “Obviously everyone will be pleased. Even people who aren’t interested in football will know what’s happened and it’ll put smiles on people’s faces and make them feel more positive.

“And maybe they’ll spend some more money, which will be good for the economy.”

Mr Hyman added: “I think that when people are positive they’re likely to spend more. I think [the win] will be a boost but how long it lasts and how meaningful it is remains to be seen.” Meanwhile another splurge is expected when fans reunite in pubs to watch England’s next clash in Rome on Saturday night. The British Beer and Pub Association had predicted supporters would knock back more than five million pints for yesterday’s match.

But that figure could end up much higher as the Three Lions take a step closer to the Euro 2020 final.

In addition, the prospect of sunshine forecast for this weekend is bound to set the national mood soaring even higher.

Punters will be able to gather in pub gardens, parks and back lawns to watch the big game, following a miserable week of downpours in some parts.

The fine weather also means thousands are expected to rush to supermarkets to stock up on their favourite food for a barbecue with friends as they cheer on England.

But – and whisper it softly – the nation’s financial experts have suggested the economic benefits would be significantly larger if England were to go on to lift that coveted trophy next month. We can dream...
