BAILIFFS CHASING SOMEONE ELSE’S DEBT

-

Q

I have received a letter from bailiffs to say they will be attending my property to remove goods in relation to a debt that has nothing to do with me. The debtor is the previous tenant. What should I do?

Abigail Kingston

AThis is a common occurrence, especially with rental properties. All you need to do is provide the bailiff with a copy of your tenancy agreement and ID. These two documents will show the bailiffs they are not entitled to attend your address as the debtor has nothing to do with the property any more.

Q

My holiday let in Cornwall was not what we expected. The walk to the beach was longer than we had been advised and the accommodation was really small. Can I ask for some money back as we do not feel that we have had value for what we paid?

Look carefully at the agent/ owner’s description. If the property did not match that, you will be entitled to a remedy, probably a price reduction. If the experience simply did not live up to what you “thought” it was going to be, you are not entitled to anything.
