Failings after student lover beaten by Dr
SUSSEX University apologised for its “inadequate” response after a senior lecturer beat up his student girlfriend.
Media expert Dr Lee Salter was convicted in 2016 of assaulting postgraduate journalism student Allison Smith, then 24.
Ms Smith said she was punched in the face in September 2015. Salter, then 40, got a suspended sentence.
He lodged an appeal but then withdrew it, saying his partner, family and friends have “gone through enough”. The lecturer worked for a year before he was suspended.
A report found the university had failed in its duty of care and took too long to suspend Salter.
Vice-chancellor Adam Tickell has apologised to Ms Smith. He wants to “create a culture of transparency, respect and responsibility”.
