SHOULD MOTORISTS HAVE TO PAY MORE FOR THEIR PETROL?

-

Yes

I SUPPOSE it was inevitable that petrol prices would start to creep back up as Covid lockdowns gradually come to an end (“Petrol most expensive in 8 years”, July 7).

Many sectors of the economy have had a terrible year and it’s obvious that they will start to want to recoup their losses.

If you go to a restaurant, I suppose you will pay more for food and more for a drink in a pub, so why shouldn’t it be the same for petrol firms? At least tax goes to government as it bids to pay off debt.

Neil Hunter, Edinburgh

No

SO HERE we go again. Petrol companies hammering motorists as soon as they get back in their cars ready to return to work or enjoy leisure time after lockdown.

It was obvious as night follows day that prices would be hiked up.

It’s been a delight to work from home, along with many other people who utter the same sentiment, and save a fortune on fuel costs.

I get it that petrol firms need to boost their profits. Perhaps policy makers should take some of the high taxes off petrol and put it onto other goods instead. Lisa Booth,
