1889: The last bareknuckle world heavyweight boxing contest took place. John L Sullivan beat Jake Kilrain over 75 rounds at Richburg, Mississippi.
1961: Angela Mortimer, right, beat Christine Truman in the first all-British women’s final at Wimbledon since
1914. 1978: Bjorn Borg beat Jimmy Connors 6-2 6-2 6-3 in the men’s singles final at Wimbledon to successfully defend his title.
2011: Britain’s Bradley Wiggins withdrew from the Tour de France due to a broken collarbone sustained on stage seven.
2012: Roger Federer won a record-equalling seventh Wimbledon singles title, beating Andy Murray 4-6 7-5 6-3 6-4 in the Briton’s first final at SW19. Murray would go on to gain revenge later in the summer at the same venue in the Olympic final.
2014: Germany recorded the largest margin of victory in a FIFA World Cup semi-final with a 7-1 demolition of hosts Brazil.
2017: The British & Irish Lions and New Zealand drew their Test series 1-1 after Owen Farrell kicked a penalty two minutes from time in a dramatic 15-15 draw at Eden Park.
2018: Lewis Hamilton battled back from last to second as his championship rival Sebastian Vettel won a dramatic British Grand Prix.
