1889: The last bareknuckl­e world heavyweigh­t boxing contest took place. John L Sullivan beat Jake Kilrain over 75 rounds at Richburg, Mississipp­i.

1961: Angela Mortimer, right, beat Christine Truman in the first all-British women’s final at Wimbledon since

1914. 1978: Bjorn Borg beat Jimmy Connors 6-2 6-2 6-3 in the men’s singles final at Wimbledon to successful­ly defend his title.

2011: Britain’s Bradley Wiggins withdrew from the Tour de France due to a broken collarbone sustained on stage seven.

2012: Roger Federer won a record-equalling seventh Wimbledon singles title, beating Andy Murray 4-6 7-5 6-3 6-4 in the Briton’s first final at SW19. Murray would go on to gain revenge later in the summer at the same venue in the Olympic final.
