An Andy precedent for Bob

- By Neil McLeman

BOB MacINTYRE is inspired by fellow Scot Andy Murray as he seeks a first Major title this weekend.

The left-hander from Oban tied for sixth on his Major debut at Royal Portrush in 2019.

The world No.53 – who won his first European Tour title in Cyprus last year – has made the cut in all three US Majors this season.

Murray lost five Grand Slam tennis finals before winning Wimbledon aged 26 in 2013.

And sport-mad MacIntyre, 24, playing his seventh Major, said: “He is a legend of Scottish sports. He is someone I can really relate to. He has the same fighting spirit and never-say-die attitude.

“He has been unbelievable for sport in Scotland. And he is still trying his best.

“It is the same with a lot of golfers. They get older and it becomes more difficult. It is easier the younger you are – the body is fresher and you have not done as many miles on the road.

“But he has been brilliant. It would be great to speak to him and pick his brains. I’d certainly settle for three Majors – the amount he has won.

“Although I finished sixth in Portrush, I was doing everything I could to learn. This year I’ve proved I can compete. I’m not here to make up the numbers. I’ll lay it all on the line.”

MacIntyre is the only Scot in the 156-man field for The Open which starts today.

“You come here and you’re the only Scot, you’re fighting for the flag,” he said.

“I just love seeing the Scottish flag flying here. Everything about Scotland is brilliant.

“I play golf because I love it. I compete because I love the fight.”
