Adam re-Peaty!

- By Jeremy Armstrong

ADAM Peaty may have become the first British swimmer to retain an Olympic title but that didn’t save him from a telling off from Mum.

The 26-year-old claimed our first gold of the Games yesterday with victory in the 100m breaststroke. But it was his live interview on BBC that earned him a ticking off from his mother Caroline for using bad language.

The children’s nursery manager, 55, watched with husband Mark, 60, a part-time industrial cleaner, at their home in Uttoxeter, Staffs.

She said: “I think Adam is relieved he has got the gold and has a few more races this week so will be focused now on moving on to the next.

“For his most important races we are always there in the stands, so it was really difficult not being there and the fact that he also knows we were not there physically.

“But he knew we would be rooting for him from home and watching it live. I had to tell him off when he called us and I told him to stop swearing.

“Our house was so quiet, we couldn’t breathe. We are beyond proud.”

After his victory Adam thanked the nation for getting behind him for five years, his family and his “beautiful boy” George, who is 10 months old.

He added: “It means the world to be me. This victory wasn’t mine. It was the British team’s and my family and friends’.”

His partner, artist Eiri Munro, said: “I wish I could be there to support and celebrate these monumental life moments. I hope he feels all the love we’re sending from the other side of the world.”

Adam covers around 60,000 metres a week in the pool, rising at dawn to go to sessions six days a week, before doing a punishing weights routine.

It takes a toll on his body, and requires 8,000 calories a day. He jokes that when he is not “swimming, he is eating”. He had not lost over this distance in more than seven years and has won the 100m breaststroke at the last three World Championships.

He has broken the world record five times and is the only man to have swum it in under 57 seconds.

With this title secured, he will have the chance to add further medals to his haul when he competes in the men’s 4x100m medley relay and, potentially, the mixed 4x100m medley relay.
