Paradise no more...UK arrivals

- By Ed Dracott

A COUPLE’S honeymoon has been cut from a fortnight to just two days after their dream destination of Mexico was hit by UK travel restrictions.

Groom Joe Coward, 29, discovered the new rules after landing early yesterday – and had to quickly book a return flight to London. If he had not, he and his bride would have had to pay £3,715 – £2,285 for a solo traveller, plus an extra £1,430 for an additional adult in a room – to quarantine in a hotel for 11 days on their return. This will be applied to all British tourists who do not arrive back in the UK before 4am on Sunday, because Mexico is now on the Government’s “red list”.

Joe, a student from London, said last night: “We’ve arranged a flight for tomorrow and will be spending today getting ready to turn right around and go home.

“We feel extremely angry at the Government’s incompetent handling of international travel rules during this crisis, and incredibly sad and frustrated that the time that should’ve been spent enjoying being newlyweds has been ruined.”

Ayo Faley, 24, a call handler for NHS test-and-trace in London, also landed in Cancun yesterday but plans to stay and pay for quarantine afterwards.

She was among the British tourists who were greeted with a sign saying “Welcome to Paradise”, only to discover their nightmare had come true.
