Mum and boyfriend killed girl after text threat

- By Richard Vernalls

A MOTHER and her boyfriend killed her threeyear-old daughter days after she made a text threat.

“Happy” Kaylee-Jayde Priest was found dead at the flat where she lived with mother, Nicola Priest, on August 9 last year.

Priest rang 999 but the youngster was “dead before the call”, Birmingham Crown Court was told.

Kaylee died from serious chest and abdominal injuries and medics later found she had also suffered historical injuries including a broken breastbone and ribs and lower leg fractures.

Priest, 23, and her then lover Callum Redfern, 22, blamed each other during the trial. Both were cleared of murder yesterday, but convicted of manslaughter.

Jurors heard Priest would hit Kaylee around the head and call her a “f ****** brat”, and the youngster was also heard crying “in a fearful tone”. In a text message days before Kaylee’s death, Priest told Redfern: “I’m gonna kill her... because she keeps leaving the living room or going in the kitchen, so I’ve paled [hit] her one and smacked her for s ******* in her nappy.”

Redfern said: “Good – give her one from me.”

Priest, of Edgbaston, Birmingham, and Redfern, of Dudley,West Midlands, will be sentenced today.
