Whisky helps me tot up 108 years

- News Reporter

BETTY Spear says “hard work and a tipple of whisky once a week” has helped her reach the ripe old age of 108.

And as she celebrated her birthday, she said Covid is “nothing compared to the First World War”.

Born in Ireland in 1913 Betty, who still danced Irish jigs at 103, also recommended “keeping active and drinking a strong cup of tea” to prolong life.

Her family, friends and the local mayor turned up to wish her a happy birthday at St Judes Nursing Home in Sutton, south London.

Mrs Spear moved to

London aged 18 to become a nurse before getting married in 1947. She gave up smoking in her 90s after heart disease killed her husband George and daughter Anne.

Her granddaughter Jane Welch, 50, said: “She’s been through the wars and always comes out fighting and I’m very proud to have her as my grandmother.”
