Since October 2001, 457 British personnel were lost in Afghanista­n – including 50 who died as a result of illness, non combat injuries or accidents. A further 5,700 troops were badly injured, 645 seriously, many needing amputation­s. More than 100,000 servicemen and women have been deployed in total. The last combat troops left in 2014 with 750 remaining to train Afghan forces. The UK cost of the war has been £22.2billion.
