The right snuff...box Nelson had to win lover

- By Ollie Buckley

A SNUFF box thought to have been given away by Lord Horatio Nelson to impress his lover is up for sale for £45,000.

The tortoiseshell trinket features a miniature watercolour of the Amalfi coast on top.

It was originally owned by the British naval hero and gifted to his personal secretary George Unwin during a party in Sicily in late 1798 or early 1799.

Also there was Emma, Lady Hamilton, Nelson’s long-time lover. She and her elderly husband, Sir William, had nursed him in 1798 after he was injured in the Battle of the Nile.

It is thought Nelson gave the box to Unwin over dinner, to show

off his generosity. It is being sold by Paul Fraser Collectibles, with a letter by

Unwin’s son, George, which reads: “My Father had lost his own snuff box...and Lord Nelson handed over to him this identical box.”
