Our front page reported the sensational death of film star Marilyn Monroe, revealing she had been found lying naked and face down in bed in her luxury Hollywood bungalow still clutching a telephone.
On her bedside table were 30 pill bottles, including an empty one which had contained sleeping pills.
Her death was ruled a probable suicide by the Los Angeles County coroner’s office.
95 years ago (1926)
American Gertrude Ederle, 20, became the first woman to swim the English Channel, in 14 hours and 34 minutes, beating the men’s record by almost two hours.
As Gertrude swam ashore in a stunt for the press, she was greeted by an immigration officer who asked for her passport.
30 years ago (1991)
The world’s first website went online at CERN, Switzerland by British computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee.
It gave an explanation of what the world wide web was, how to use a browser, search the web for information and set up a web server.
