Lopez climbing first

SPANISH teen Alberto Gines Lopez clinched the first climbing gold medal.

Nathaniel Coleman of the US took home the silver while Austria’s Jakob Schubert bagged bronze.

Lopez, right, came out on top in the sport’s Olympic debut, with the combined event contested over three disciplines.The opener was speed, a head-to-head race up a 15-metre wall, followed by bouldering, which involved problem-solving. Lead, the last event, was a timed climb that tests athletes’ endurance.
