Youngsters’ enthusiasm for jab rises

- By Hanna Geissler

YOUNG people are becoming less reluctant to have Covid jabs.

Among those aged 16 and 17, who can now be vaccinated, hesitancy has decreased from 14 to 11 per cent.

For those 18 to 21, it went down to five per cent from nine per cent, with a one per cent drop for 22 to 25-year-olds to nine per cent.

The Office for National Statistics quizzed 15,433 people aged 16 and above from June 23 to July 18.The findings were compared with a survey from May 26 to June 20.

Vaccine hesitancy refers to adults who would refuse or not commit if offered the jab.

Overall, 96 per cent reported positive sentiment towards vaccines, a figure that was unchanged.

Dr Nikki Kanani, deputy lead for the NHS vaccination programme, thanked her staff for boosting confidence in the jab, “the single best defence”. She urged all who are eligible to come forward.

Among the teenagers to receive a shot was Eve Thomson in Barrhead, East Renfrewshire, yesterday where Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon met staff and patients during a visit to promote continued uptake of the vaccine.
