A MAJOR wind turbine plant is to more than double in size after being handed Government funding.

The Siemens Gamesa factory in Hull makes blades for wind turbines. The company said the upgrade will create 200 new jobs as part of a total investment of £186million.

The Government said Siemens Gamesa will receive grant funding from its £160million Offshore Wind Manufacturing Investment Support scheme.

PM Boris Johnson said: “The Humber region embodies the UK’s green industrial revolution, with new investment into developing the next generation of wind turbines set to create new jobs, export opportunities and clean power across the country.”

Siemens Gamesa UK managing director Clark MacFarlane added: “As we work towards unlocking the potential of wind power, we applaud the Government’s strong and consistent support for offshore wind.”

The Hull plant is the largest offshore wind manufacturing facility in the UK, employing around 1,000 people. It has built more than 1,500 turbine blades since 2016.

The firm said construction on the expansion is due to begin within weeks and be completed in 2023.
