- ROAD TO GLORY: Cooke takes gold

1907: The first long-distance car race ended in Paris, having started in Beijing exactly two months earlier.

1954: Jockey Sir Gordon Richards retired at the age of 50 after a British record 4,870 victories. He last raced on July 10 after a fall at Sandown.

1984: Mary Decker fell over the leg of Britain’s Zola Budd during the 3,000m Olympic final in Los Angeles. Budd was disqualifi­ed for tripping but then reinstated to her final placing of seventh after Decker was ruled to have caused the incident with “aggressive tactics”.

2005: The Premier League upheld guilty verdicts on Ashley Cole and Jose Mourinho in the Chelsea tapping-up scandal, but reduced their fines to £75,000 each.

2006: John Terry was named England captain by new boss Steve McClaren, in succession to David Beckham. 2007: Carlos Tevez completed his protracted move to Manchester United on a two-year loan deal.

2008: Nicole Cooke won a gold medal for Great Britain in the women’s cycling road race at the Beijing Olympics.
