1907: The first long-distance car race ended in Paris, having started in Beijing exactly two months earlier.
1954: Jockey Sir Gordon Richards retired at the age of 50 after a British record 4,870 victories. He last raced on July 10 after a fall at Sandown.
1984: Mary Decker fell over the leg of Britain’s Zola Budd during the 3,000m Olympic final in Los Angeles. Budd was disqualified for tripping but then reinstated to her final placing of seventh after Decker was ruled to have caused the incident with “aggressive tactics”.
2005: The Premier League upheld guilty verdicts on Ashley Cole and Jose Mourinho in the Chelsea tapping-up scandal, but reduced their fines to £75,000 each.
2006: John Terry was named England captain by new boss Steve McClaren, in succession to David Beckham. 2007: Carlos Tevez completed his protracted move to Manchester United on a two-year loan deal.
2008: Nicole Cooke won a gold medal for Great Britain in the women’s cycling road race at the Beijing Olympics.
