Saints go for Armstrong to fill Ings void

-

SOUTHAMPTON have made their first move to fill the gap left by the sale of Danny Ings after agreeing a fee for Blackburn’s Adam Armstrong.

Striker Armstrong, 24, sat out the Ewood Park club’s seasonopening 2-1 Championship win at home to Swansea on Saturday.

After an excellent goalscoring return last season, the former England Under-21 international has attracted plenty of Premier League attention.

But Saints have struck a deal in the region of £15million with Rovers and Armstrong will undergo his medical today.

Armstrong came through the ranks at Newcastle before leaving for Blackburn on a permanent deal in 2018.

Newcastle are in line for a slice of the fee as part of his sale.

The move comes after Saints sold Ings, who scored 12 league goals last season, to Aston Villa.

Armstrong played 21 times for Newcastle before going on loan to Coventry, Barnsley and Bolton.

He also joined Blackburn on loan in January 2018 before completing a permanent transfer in the summer of that year.

Blackburn finished in 15th spot last season and Armstrong ended the campaign with 28 goals, only bettered by Brentford’s Ivan Toney (33).
