I won’t be a harried Potter with White windfall

- By Paul Brown

GRAHAM POTTER says Brighton must spend their £50million BenWhite windfall carefully as they weigh up a number of deals.

The Seagulls are eyeing moves for Arsenal misfit Eddie Nketiah, Getafe wing-back Marc Cucurella and Independiente hot-shot Alan Velasco.

But Potter has warned that his club will not be held to ransom by rivals expecting them to splash the cash after White’s big-money move to Arsenal.

The Brighton head coach said: “Ben played a lot of minutes for us last year and was a key player.

“But the finances involved meant it was a really good option for us as a club to improve, to keep growing, and we need to then use the money wisely to develop the team further.”

Potter also suggested Brighton will not look to sign a direct like-for-like replacement for the England centre-back.

The Seagulls could instead move from a back three to a back four and concentrate their efforts on finding a top-notch Premier League goalscorer.

Potter said: “It’s not a case of there being another Ben White out there.

“We have to be creative with our solutions, look internally to what we have and try to find a different type of solution.

“There are always a few options to that and that’s the exciting part.”
