GPs must rule gun hopefuls are ‘safe’

- By Rod Minchin

ANYONE applying for a gun licence must have a medical check when tighter measures are introduced following the Plymouth shootings.

The new legal guidance means doctors will have to tell police whether an applicant has any “relevant medical conditions”, including an assessment of their mental health.

The Government had already announced firearms applicants will be subject to social media checks.

It comes as questions continue over how Plymouth killer Jake Davison got a licence before killing five people, including a toddler, and himself.

He had received mental health support during lockdown from a helpline service.

Davison was a self-declared “incel” – involuntary celibate – who loathed women.

The guidance will be published within weeks.
