Babs’ husband becomes Alzheimer’s ambassador

- By Keiran Southern

DAME Barbara Windsor’s widower has been appointed an ambassador of Alzheimer’s Research UK.

Scott Mitchell, 57, said he was honoured to accept the role, eight months after his EastEnders star wife died at the age of 83.

A fundraising page set up by Scott in his wife’s memory raised more than £160,000 for the charity.

After Dame Barbara’s diagnosis in 2014, the couple – who wed in 2000 – raised awareness of the illness and fought for government commitments to prioritise finding a cure.

Scott said: “Barbara felt like a friend to everyone even if they’d never met her, so to have someone like her being so open about her diagnosis made others feel comfortable to do the same.

“She would’ve absolutely loved to know she’s continuing to make a difference and helping other people in this way.”

Dementia affects 850,000 people in the UK, according to Alzheimer’s Research UK.
