Final has fringe benefits

DURHAM

-

GLAMORGAN will resist the chance to bring their returning Hundred players back to face Durham in today’s One-Day Cup final at Trent Bridge.

In nearly six decades of limited-overs cricket, the Welsh county have lost the three finals they have reached.

But they will keep faith with the squad, rather than recall players such as Colin Ingram and David Lloyd following their franchise commitments.

Coach David Harrison said: “It wouldn’t be fair on

GLAMORGAN these guys not to give them the opportunity. Every player has performed.”

One-day captain Kiran Carlson believes their march to the final shows young fringe players can shine if given the chance.

It is 17 years since Glamorgan won silverware, and Carlson said: “They’ve done themselves proud. It’s amazing we’re challenging for a trophy.”

Durham captain Scott Borthwick is optimistic his club are on the up again after being plunged into crisis by financial woes in 2017. He said: “The belief is coming back that Durham should be in Division One – and we do deserve to be playing proper cricket with the big boys.”

The competition has faced claims of being a secondary event as it is running with The Hundred and its final relegated to a weekday in Nottingham instead of a Saturday at Lord’s.

But Borthwick said: “To captain Durham in a one-day final is something I’m very proud of.”
