We’ll set up a ring of steel to save life of Geronimo

- By Cyril Dixon

THE owner of doomed alpaca Geronimo yesterday vowed to “form a ring of steel” around her pet – as he was given another 24-hour reprieve.

Helen Macdonald said government vets had now promised not to carry out the extermination order until at least 5pm tonight.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) ordered his destruction after the animal twice tested positive for bovine tuberculosis.

But Helen, who imported him from New Zealand, believes the tests are returning false positives.

Earlier this month, she lost her final appeal to save Geronimo at the High Court in London and a warrant was signed for his destruction within 30 days.

On Wednesday an application for an injunction to halt the order was rejected by Mrs Justice Stacey.

Last night the 50-year-old veterinary nurse and breeder declared from her farm in Wickwar, Glos, where her alpaca is in isolation: “It is now all-out war.

“We will form a ring of steel around Geronimo.

“There is an army willing to fight for his survival.”

A Defra spokesman said: “We are sympathetic to Ms Macdonald’s situation – just as we are with everyone with animals affected by this disease. “Bovine tuberculosis is one of the greatest animal health threats we face today and causes devastation and distress. “Therefore, we need to do everything we can to tackle this disease to stop it spreading.”
