WANING investor confidence sent stock markets scurrying for cover, with the FTSE 100 losing 1.5 per cent to finish at 7,058.9.

The FTSE 250 and All Share were also down, falling 1 per cent to 23,606.9 and 1.4 per cent to 4,064.1 respective­ly.

Markets were spooked by fears that the US Federal Reserve might start withdrawin­g Covid-19 support early, as well as the spread of the Delta variant and weakness in the resources sector.

Anglo American was the biggest loser, falling 10 per cent to close at 2,912p per share.

BP fell 4.9 per cent to 287.8p, while Antofagast­a slipped 4.5 per cent to 1,405p, even though it quadrupled its dividend. Burberry was down 6.6 per cent to 1,812.5p.

Lighting products maker Luceco was the leading light, climbing 6.4 per cent to 455p. In the FTSE 100,

Just Eat Takeaway investors gobbled up shares, sending them up 2.4 per cent to 6,797p.
