Pets Paralympics to see who’s top disabled dog

- By Eugene Henderson

EVERY dog has its day and now they have a sporting chance to prove it at the world’s first pet Paralympics.

To make the event the most inclusive canine challenge, organisers have designed agility courses for all dogs, including elderly and disabled animals.

The unique Petsure Games, held from Friday to Sunday, come hot on the heels of the official Paralympics, which open in Tokyo tomorrow when athletes from around the world take part in a celebration of sport for all.

Meanwhile, canine companions all over the country are going barking mad to be ready for the Petsure event, billed as “three days of furry fun” at the Bath & West Country Festival.

Maggie the cockerjack was seen working on her jumping, Tazzie the three-legged boxer was hard at work training for the weaving poles event and Slinky the cockapoo, who has a hernia, has been busy honing her sniff-and-fetch skills.

And “Pet influencer” Puggy Smalls from Kent, who has more than 200,000 Instagram followers, donned sweat bands in a podium pooch publicity shot for the games, organised by insurer Petsure.

Legendary cricket commentator Henry (Blowers) Bloefeld will be providing hilarious commentary for every competitor and TV vet Dr Scott Miller and leading dog trainers will be on hand to offer advice to owners.

The pair have also been involved with advising about the course, to ensure everything is as safe and fun as possible.

Organisers say every dog can have a go on the course and those wishing to compete can practise and then attempt a time trial.

A spokeswoman for the games said: “With events covering jumpless jumps to accommodate our less abled pets, scentbased fetch to include any visibly impaired pups, there is something for all.

“This promises to be the most inclusive of animal sporting events ever held and will hopefully challenge any pet prejudice that may exist.”
