Dyche sees red at Klopp comments

to do that.” Dyche cannot understand the carping by Klopp, below, when none of his Burnley players were booked and felt the Reds boss overstepped the mark by naming his strikers.

“We’ve got professional players who have worked very hard in their careers to get to where they’ve got to.

“The implications of what he said about challenges is wrong, It’s inappropriate and it’s not something I would do myself.

“My worry is he has questioned that teams shouldn’t do everything within the rules to win the game, which we clearly did because there wasn’t a single card given out.”

Dyche believes most fans like the new light-touch approach from referees, which was trialled at Euro 2020, to let the game flow more.

“Every manager has the right to have their say, he’s [Jurgen Klopp’s] certainly had his,” said the Burnley boss. “Across football it seems to me the feedback has probably been the opposite to that. Overall it’s fair to say most people around football and most voices around football have suggested there was nothing in the game.

“I was very pleased with what happened at the Euros. The feedback from most fans I know generally was very positive.

“It’s a step in the right direction. There’s always going to be a cooling-off period for referees because they have been so used to giving virtually every contact and now they’re being told not to give every contact.”

Premier League bosses will stick with the new policy. Dyche believes watching last season on TV gave fans a new perspective on the game and showed them that referees needed to let more challenges go.

“When you’re in the stadium – and I include myself in this – you’re so involved in the moment, you think you see something clearly and then afterwards you think ‘no, I’ve changed my opinion on that’,” he said.
